SUBJECT:  Next Meeting of May 20, 2009 and Assorted Information

Good Morning all:

The general steps and modifications to the County programs that the Smart Growth Initiative was to accomplish are largely complete.  The biggest steps yet to be completed involve the County’s own regulatory reforms, and they are being painstakingly examined.  Given that the development of updated County Goals and Objectives will be continuing for some time yet, I attach a working paper that the Smart Growth Committee will be reviewing and modifying that can serve as input to that effort.

The key is an understanding that there are global trends that should be considered.  The draft, "Trends and Their Impact" has recommendations influenced by these trends which are under these headings:

  1. Redefine the land use and transportation alignment
  2. Scale for the vehicle is not the scale for the human dimension.
  3. When one sizing does not fit.
  4. Infrastructure and urban pattern.
  5. The engineering of the County’s system is sound.  (But).
  6. Public consultation on practicality
  7. Energy multipliers
  8. Rail

Thank you for any review of this work in progress you may undertake.
